This guide can help you quickly find and recover files in MiniTool Power Data Recovery in various situations.

Note:
  1. Please do not write new files to the drive you want to retrieve deleted data from as this may overwrite the deleted files.
  2. Please do not save the recovered files to the original drive as this may overwrite deleted data as well.
  3. Files that have been overwritten cannot be restored.

How to Find and Recover Deleted Files Quickly

Launch MiniTool Power Data Recovery and select the partition to scan where your lost data is originally stored. In our test, we select partition D: for scanning.

After the scanning process is complete, you will see the interface of the scan result.

In this window you can find files from one of the following 4 locations and then save them:

1. Original folder tree

Generally, you can find the deleted items from the original path. Please double click on each partition to view its contents and in most cases you can get the files you need from the first partition (Existing partition) Find. The deleted elements are always marked with a red "x". Of course, besides the first partition, you can also find them from other partitions.

2. $ Dir folder in the Lost Files folder

If you cannot find the files you need from the original path, please double-click the folderLost files in each partition and view the files in the folders$ You in the preview. The deleted items are always stored in$ YouFolders if they are not in the original path.

3. Trash folder

If lost files were originally saved on the HDD, you can also use the folderwaste paper bin check as the following screenshot shows:

4. More lost files

Just double click on the folderMore lost files and restore certain types of files. Files stored in this folder will be found by scanning the data area directly (bypassing file system) so they will lose their original names and you will need to restore them to another drive to view the contents.

How to Quickly Find and Recover Files from Formatted Drives

Run MiniTool Power Data Recovery, and then select the formatted drive to scan. In the test we formatted H: so we select it to scan:

When the scan is complete, you will see the following interface:

Please double-click on each partition to display its content. If you can find files from the original folder tree, just select the files you want and save them to another drive. But in most cases it won't find a folder tree and you can get the folderLost files see only after opening a partition. Please double click on the folderLost files, and then view files in the folders of$ You in the preview. In our test we find the files we want from the$ You-Folders:

You can also get files from the folderMore lost files find and save.

Please select certain types of files and save them on another drive.

How to Quickly Find and Recover Files from Corrupted / Inaccessible Drives

First of all, run MiniTool Power Data Recovery and select the damaged or inaccessible drive to scan:

When the scan is complete, you will see the following interface:

Please double-click on each partition to display its content. If you can find the files you need from the original folder tree, that's fine. Just select the files you want and save them to another drive. In most cases, however, users need data from the folderMore lost files restore:

Please select certain types of files and save them on another drive.

How to Quickly Find and Recover Files from Lost Drives

First of all, run MiniTool Power Data Recovery and see if you can get the lost drive out of modeLost partition can find:

When found, just select the lost drive to scan. If not, please click the Hard Drive tab and select the entire hard drive to be scanned:

After the scanning process is complete, the following window will appear:

Please double-click on each partition to save the content either in the original path or in the folderLost files to browse. If you can find the files you want from one of these partitions, just save them to another drive. However, if you cannot find the files you need, please double click on the folderMore lost files and save certain types of files to another drive.

Tip: Files that are in the More lost files are found bypassing the file system so they lose their original names, and users will have to restore them to another drive to view the contents.

How to do a RAW scan

In some cases, it is recommended to perform a RAW scan with MiniTool Power Data Recovery. This happens whenever the program gets stuck while rebuilding the virtual file system. After the RAW scan, all files found will be on a drive namedAll RAW files listed.

To do a RAW scan, please run MiniTool Power Data Recovery, find the existing partition / lost partition / unallocated space to be recovered and go toSettings. Then disable all file systems before scanning the ones you want.

However, if the RAW scan does not show any useful data either, it means that our program cannot detect any data or it failed to read the hard drive.

Tip: The RAW scan does not work for hard disk drive mode where you have to select at least one file system.

FAQ when using MiniTool Power Data Recovery

1. How can I recover files from the ESD USB drive?
ESD USB drives are usually caused by Windows being burned to an external hard drive. And then you get a hard drive with 32GB FAT32 partition followed by unallocated space which takes up all the remaining space. To recover data from ESD USB drives, please make sure to select the entire drive (in Hard Drive mode) instead of selecting the 32GB partition or unallocated space for a scan.
2. How can I recover data from a BitLocker encrypted hard drive?
MiniTool Power Data Recovery cannot recover data from the BitLocker encrypted hard drive unless you decrypt in advance.
3. How long does it take to complete the scan?
The time it takes to scan a drive depends on many factors, such as how much data you have stored on that drive and what the current status of the drive is.
4. The error message “The file system information could not be found from the selected device.” Was displayed and no files were found.
Most likely, your device is experiencing physical problems. In this case, please take a screenshot to show us your hard drive layout in Windows Disk Management or use hard drive verification tool like CrystalDiskInfo to see if your hard drive has any physical problems.
5. Why did the program find many partitions?
When our program finds a file system track, it will show it as a partition after scanning, regardless of whether the file system is intact or not. If it finds 10 filesystem tracks, it will show 10 partitions. If the file system is intact, all files on this partition will be displayed correctly. If the file system is incomplete or damaged, all files will be in the RAW Files folder and lose their original name.

Files in the partition All RAW files are not found by the file system, so they lose their original names and date information.

6. What do RAW files mean?
RAW files means that any files they contain will not be found by the file system, so they will lose their original names and date information. How does this happen? If our program has found files from incomplete or damaged file systems, all files will be placed in the RAW files folder.
7. What does the $ Dir file mean?
$ Dir files are found by the NTFS file system and the record is corrupted. If our program cannot find the parent directory of a file, this file will be placed in a folder $ Dir.
8. Why recovered files have lost their original names and are shown as File1, File2, File3 .....
In general, there are 2 causes for this problem:
  1. Errors occurred during the scan. In this case, please scan the drive again.
  2. The file system is damaged. In this case, the original folder structure cannot be restored.
9. The program said it saved files successfully, but I only found an empty folder.

In general, there are 4 causes for this problem:

  1. There is not enough free space on the drive to save the file. Please double check the unused space on the drive.
  2. There are errors in the path selected for recovered files. If so, please right click on an individual file and restore it to the root directory of a drive to see if it is there. If you've already closed the program, you can restart it and choose the function you used to scan the drive, and then load previous scan results.
  3. Errors occurred while scanning. If so, please scan the drive again and then save a single file to see if it is there.
  4. Windows does not support the file system of the drive you used to store recovered files. Please try to save files on an NTFS or FAT32 partition.
10. Recovered files cannot be opened in other supported programs.
In general, there are 3 causes for this problem:
  1. There are errors in the path selected for recovered files. In this case, please right-click an individual file and restore it to the root directory of a drive to see if it opens properly. If you've already closed the program, you can run it again and choose the function you used to scan the drive and then load previous scan results.
  2. Errors occurred while scanning. If so, please scan the drive again and save a single file to see if it opens.
  3. The file was damaged before recovery. MiniTool Power Data Recovery can only recover lost / deleted files, it cannot repair damaged files.
