Carolus Rex is the Latin name of Charles XII (1682-1718), King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718.
In 1700 (only a few years after his coronation at the age of 15) Sweden was attacked by Denmark, Saxe-Poland and Russia, starting the Great Northern War. The young king was able to bring Denmark temporarily to its knees by besieging Copenhagen. With an army of about ten thousand men he defeated the much larger Russian army at the Battle of Narva. Charles XII occupied Warsaw and the old royal Polish city of Krakow in 1702. In 1706 he was able to end the personal union of Saxe-Poland with several vitories over Augustus II.
By 1708 the only remaining enemy was Tsar Peter the Great. After a failed attempt to attack Moscow, Charles suffered a decisive defeat against the Tsardom of Russia at the Battle of Poltava. He was thus forced to flee to the Ottoman Empire.
In 1714 he returned to Swedish Pomerania riding on horseback across Europe in just fifteen days. However, in 1715 he lost the fortified town of Stralsund and had to escape to Sweden at the last moment.
When he tried to conquer Norway in 1718 and had besieged the strong fortress of Fredriksten at Fredrikshald (Halden) Charles was killed by a projectile. It is still unknown who fired the deadly shot, which passed right through the king's head.
Charles' death marked the end of the Swedish Empire as a major power in Europe and the struggle for the Baltic Sea dominion (Dominium Maris Baltici). The year 1721 saw the rise of the Russian Empire.

Carolus Rex is the Latin name of Charles XII. (1682--1718), who was King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718. Just a few years after his coronation at the age of 15, the Great Northern War broke out in 1700, in which Sweden was attacked by Denmark, Saxony-Poland and Russia. With the siege of Copenhagen, the young king was able to bring Denmark to its knees temporarily; in the battle of Narva, with an army of about ten thousand men, he defeated a numerically clearly superior Russian army. In 1702 he occupied Warsaw and Krakow, the old Polish royal city, in 1706 he ended the personal union of Saxony-Poland with a series of victories over August II.
In 1708 the only remaining opponent was Tsar Peter the Great. After the failed attempt to attack Moscow, Karl suffered a decisive defeat against Tsarist Russia in the Battle of Poltava and he was forced to flee to the Ottoman Empire.
In 1714 he returned to Swedish Pomerania in just 15 days of violence, but in 1715 he also lost the fortress town of Stralsund and escaped to Sweden at the last moment.
While trying to conquer the Danish-controlled Norway, he was fatally hit in the head in front of the Fredriksten fortress near Fredrikshald (Halden), which he was besieging. It is still unclear who fired the bullet.
After his death, Sweden's position as a major European power and the struggle for supremacy in the Baltic Sea region (Dominium Maris Baltici) ended, and the rise of the Russian Empire began in 1721.
