50 TikTok Stats That Will Blow You Away [+ INFOGRAPHIC]
TikTok is now a story of two apps. Most of TikTok's western audience originally belonged to Musical.ly. Its eastern audience knew the original app better, however, and TikTok still operates a separate version of the app called Douyin in China.
Despite being hugely popular in the US, Musical.ly was founded in Shanghai, China by longtime friends Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang. They released the app in August 2014. We have written a lot about Musical.ly in the past, including the top 20 Musical.ly influencers who have built small media empires. Although the platform has changed, most of our articles are still relevant - the former Musical.ly influencers are now TikTok's influencers. However, since we wrote this article, influencers have juggled positions and Loren Gray is now at the top of the TikTok charts.
The original version of TikTok is newer than Musical.ly. Bytedance launched it as Douyin in China in September 2016 and launched it as TikTok in the overseas market a year later.
Bytedance soon decided to expand its range. They bought Musical.ly on November 9, 2017 and merged the two platforms internationally on August 2, 2018. However, the developer still offers the original Douyin app in China as a separate app on their website.
Neither TikTok nor its predecessor Musical.ly delivers much publicly in terms of statistics. It is much more difficult to find follow lists than, for example, most other social networks. With a story this tangled, however, it isn't all that difficult to uncover a slew of TikTok stats. Let's start with this interesting look at the rise of TikTok over the past few years.
The explosive growth of TikTok
50 TikTok statistics:

Since then, TikTok has continued to grow in popularity at a rapid pace. Wallaroo estimated that TikTok would have grown its user base to 800 million since then.

15. 50.7 million fans - Douyin Record
There is some struggle for Douyin's top position. Dilraba Dilmurat and Chen He take turns at the top at different times, depending on who is attracting the most followers each month. The actress, model and singer Dilmurat currently holds the Douyin record and has exceeded 50 million followers.
16. 2014 - Musical.ly launch year
The first prototype of Musical.ly was released in April 2014, and the official version was unveiled in August of that year. It took Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang about 6 months to create the product after originally designing it as an online self-study platform. Since this didn't work out, Zhu and Yang shifted their focus to a platform that integrates music and video into a social network.
17. 2016 - TikTok / Douyin launch year

With the advent of the formal advertising market, it's likely that TikTok's revenues will now be significantly higher.
20. 20% US revenue
20% of all TikTok revenue comes from the US. That's actually smaller than it used to be, with China still being the main source of income at 69%. Before the ads came out, 42% of revenue came from the United States, but that excludes revenue from the Chinese Android version of the app.

39.323 million app installs in India in 2019
Though TikTok has always been hugely popular in its native China (albeit as Douyin), it was India that saw the biggest increase in 2019. It grew so fast that the Indian government became so concerned that they banned it for a while. Even so, there were still 323 million apps in India that year.

However, it is also relatively popular with low-income families. 18% of users say they come from households making less than $ 25,000 a year. This statistic is skewed by excluding anyone under the age of 18 - a large part of the TikTok target audience. In addition, many of the lower-income households could well be student housing, which are now poor but may be well off after graduation.
44. TikTok is used by 2 million more women than men in the United States

46. Indian users predominantly male

48. TikTok's users age with the app
There is no doubt that TikTok is extremely popular with teenagers all over the world. However, there are now some signs that the user base is aging.
