Google Chrome won't open: how to fix it

If Google Chrome doesn't open, you can usually fix the problem yourself in a few simple steps. The program may already be running in the background. In a few cases, a virus prevents you from opening Chrome.

Google Chrome won't open? Consult the Task Manager

  1. If you cannot open Google Chrome, it is mostly because it is already running as a background process.
  2. To check this, start the Task Manager in Windows. You can reach it by entering the command [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del].
  3. In the listed processes search for “Google Chrome” or “chrome.exe”, select the process and then click on “End process”.
  4. On a Mac, enter the command [cmd] + [Option] + [Esc]. Search for "Google Chrome" and end the process by clicking on "Quit now".

If Google Chrome still won't open

  1. If you still cannot start Chrome, check your PC for malware.
  2. In addition, your antivirus might block Chrome. In this case, add the browser to the list of permitted exceptions.
  3. If these steps do not solve the problem, restart your computer.
  4. There may be a bug in an update or a plugin from Google Chrome. Uninstall the program and download it again to get a bug-free version.
