How fast is 18 knots per hour

Conversion of kilometers per hour into knots

Updated on by Stefan Banse

Everyone in Germany knows the speed unit km / h, i.e. kilometers per hour. This unit is the standard for speed information in traffic, because distances are usually given in kilometers and time in hours. However, if you are on the water or in the air, the speed is given in knots (kn). Often you want to convert exactly these two values, we wish you a lot of fun with our km / h to knot converter.

Basics for converting kilometers per hour (km / h) into knots (kn)

The knot is mostly only used in seafaring and aviation. It is based on the unit of length nautical mile and the unit symbol is kn. One nautical mile is exactly 1852 meters. There is hardly any need to describe kilometers per hour. Just the "h" in "km / h" would have to be explained, which is of course the sign for hours or "hour".

Formulas for converting between km / h and knots

If you make a calculation between kilometers per hour and knots, you will now find the formulas for both starting values.

Determine number of km / h from knots:
Knot / 0.53996

Determine the number of nodes from km / h:
km / h * 0.53996
