Sukadev on flexibility
Is It Good To Be Flexible? Or should you be more steadfast at times?
When is it good to be flexible? And how can you also become more physically flexible?
These are some of the aspects that I will cover below.
To be flexible means to be able to bend over. Flex has something to do with bend, is a Latin word, inflection is inflection. And those who are flexible can also bend over. He can bow and adapt. Swami Sivananda, the great yoga master, liked to say: "Adapt, adjust, accomodate". That means, adjust to different people, to different situations, to different needs, be flexible. React flexibly. I actually mean that spiritual aspirants should Being able to be flexible. For example, there are situations where there is not much to do. Instead of being bored, enjoy the moment and do things a little slower. You need to do a lot, you don't have to think too long.
As a spiritual person, you should be able to do that too. And then there are situations where it is better to think a little longer, involve many others in the decision, and then make the decision calmly, deliberately, leisurely. Are you flexible enough to react differently?
There are people who are very sensitive. There it is important that you speak very gently. If you talked to them too loudly, they would flinch. There are the hypersensitive, the hypersensitive. You have to be gentle on that. And there are others who will not understand you if you are too gentle, so you have to be a little louder there. There are also people who don't hear properly, so you have to speak louder and clearer. And there are others, if you talk to them too loudly, their ears will hurt. So be flexible.
Of course people have their special abilities and sometimes you could say that it is good to find out who you are and to be that way. But sometimes that's a stupid excuse. Sometimes people say: "I'm just like that, that's not my thing". In doing so, they hurt others. Yes, it is good to know your strengths and to use them, it is also good to know your limits. But many limits are self-made limits and you do not know many of your strengths. Be flexible and learn to react differently. Wonder how good is it to be in the situation? Should I be quick and brisk, spontaneously, should I wait or should I do nothing? Should I approach someone calmly, leisurely, or should I speak a little louder?
Should I just let people do it or should I openly make a suggestion or even criticize? Be flexible, so you can become free.
Yoga as a way to be more flexible
Yoga, especially Hatha Yoga, makes people more flexible. There are so-called physical exercises, the asanas. These are often stretching exercises where, for example, you stretch your legs in the forward bend, and in the backward bend you stretch your chest, where you naturally make the various ligaments flexible in the rotating seat. Hatha Yoga makes people more flexible. And so it is also very important to keep expanding this flexibility.
Hopefully, physical flexibility will also help you be more mentally flexible. And even when you attend yoga classes, it is sometimes gentler, sometimes more demanding, sometimes calmer, sometimes more dynamic. A yoga teacher should also be able to flexibly adapt yoga lessons to the needs of the participants.
There are yoga teachers who specialize and always do gentle yin yoga. And there are others who do more intense power yoga. There may also be a need for specializations. I always have a tendency to be flexible myself. Sometimes I want to be able to teach advanced and sometimes very gently.
I love pushing athletic people to do things they haven't been able to do before, and I also love showing people who are having physical difficulties how to gently practice yoga so that they can also make progress .
Ask who I am, know yourself and be free - this is what Swami Shivananda liked to say, but he also said, be flexible, be empathetic and respond to others. Situations are also different. Instead of complaining about situations, take on various opportunities and situations to learn how to respond flexibly.
If you want to learn, you have to adapt to different situations instead of always using what you can already do. Be flexible, respond to others and then create.
Of course, you should not only be flexible, there are also good reasons to consciously design something.
