Some people argue that the current copy of the Qur'an that we have along with the vowels and diacritical marks is not the same original Qur'an from the time of the Prophet. But they don't realize the word Quran recitation means. Therefore, preserving the recitation of the Qur'an is essential, regardless of whether the script is different or whether it contains vowels. Of course, if the pronunciation and Arabic are the same, the meaning remains the same.
The original manuscript of the Qur'an does not contain any characters that indicate the vowels in Arabic script. These vowels are known as Tashkil, Zabar, Zair, Paish in Urdu and as Fathah, Dhammah and Kasrah in Arabic. The Arabs did not need the vowel marks and diacritical marks for correct pronunciation of the Qur'an as it was their mother tongue. However, it was difficult for Muslims of non-Arab origin to recite the Qur'an correctly without the vowels. These signs were introduced into the Quranic script during the time of the fifth Umayyad caliph, Malik-ar-Marwan (66-86 AD / 685-705 AD) and during the tenure of Al-Hajaj in Iraq.
Historians agreed that the Arabs in the first era did not know, let alone use, dots or short vowel marks on the letters and words. That's because they didn't need to, because they knew the Arabic language well. However, when other nations adopted Islam without knowing the Arabic language, errors in pronunciation began to appear.
When Abul-Aswad Ad-Du'ali heard someone reciting the following verse from Allah:
أَنَّ اللَّهَ بَرِيءٌ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُ
that Allah is released from the (obligation to) the idolater (s), and so is His Messenger
... without putting a Dhammah (the short vowel [U]) at the head of the letter ل of the word رسوله, he put a Kasrah (the short vowel [I]) below the letter ل, and so the word then meant:
that Allah is released from the idolater and from His Messenger.
“Allah's glory is upon being divorced from His Prophet.” [This means that Allah will never be divorced from His Prophet].
Therefore, he tried to put a few short vowel marks on the letters and words of the Quranic text. So he put the Fat'hah [the short vowel A] as a dot on top of the letter and the Kasrah [the short vowel I] as a dot below the letter and the Dhammah and the Kasrah [the short vowel I] as a dot below the letter and the Dhammah [the short vowel U] as a period next to the letter, and he made the sukoon [a mark indicating that the consonant is not followed by a vowel] as two periods.
Then people started developing and changing these markings until 'Abdul Malik Ibn Marwaan came and put the short vowel markers (Fathah, Kasrah and Dhammah) in place of the dots and it was easier for people to do. Undoubtedly, the setting of these signs protected the Qur'an from incorrect pronunciation and this includes the promise of Allah to protect the message, as can be read in the following verse:
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
Verily, We Ourselves have revealed this admonition, and surely We shall be its keepers.
I would like to draw your attention once again to the fact that the Qur'an has always been memorized and, among other things, has been kept that way. Since the Prophet's lifetime, Muslims have memorized the Qur'an and they knew exactly how to recite the Qur'an. Even today, millions of people have memorized the various types of recitation - something that no religion can claim, with the exception of Islam. What has been discussed above is that the addition of the vowels and diacritical marks in the Qur'anic text was done in order to make the recitation of the Qur'an easier for newly converted Muslims from non-Arabic-speaking areas, so that there are no pronunciation errors when reciting happen as you could see in the example above. This has protected the Qur'an from incorrect pronunciation and so we see the wisdom behind adding these vowels and diacritical marks.
What should also be noted is that the texts that have no vowels and diacritical marks can be read correctly by experts in the Arabic language. Even people who have memorized the Qur'an can read the texts correctly without vowels and diacritical marks, as they know the Qur'an completely by heart and know the rules of Tajweed.
