Learn How to Use Toyota Paddle Shifters

There is something to be said for having complete control over the performance of your new 2016 Toyota Corolla. In past generations, that meant selecting a Toyota model that featured a manual transmission and gave you control over gear changes. Many models now feature an automatic transmission with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters to combine the convenience of an automatic gearbox with the performance of a manual. If this is new to you and a feature you want to explore, you can learn how to use Toyota paddle shifters right here at Gale Toyota.

How Do Steering-Wheel Mounted Paddle Shifters Work?

Incorporated into what is often termed a “semi-automatic transmission” steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters give you the best of both worlds. Paddle shifters mounted on the back of your steering wheel will allow you to upshift or downshift through gears at the tap of a button. When equipped in the athletic Toyota Corolla S trim with the CVTi-S transmission, you can shift through seven gears to amplify your performance.

Available for several Toyota models, including the sport-tuned 2016 Toyota RAV4 SE, steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters will give you a greater degree of control over your performance and are easy to use. Using the Toyota Corolla S as an example, we will illustrate how easy this feature is to use. In order to use the steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, you must be in Drive mode or Manual mode. Drive mode allows you to temporarily switch to manual gear shifts when you need a little boost going up an incline or in other specific situations.

In Manual mode, you will have complete control over your performance. To put your Toyota Corolla into Manual mode, move the shift lever to the left. When you want to shift into a higher gear, pull the + paddle on the right side of your steering wheel and enjoy a quick boost of power. For a quick downshift, just pull the - paddle on the left side of your steering wheel. If you attempt to downshift and hear two warning tones, it means you are approaching the engine redline. If you enjoy the convenience of an automatic transmission and the sharp performance of a manual transmission, an automatic gearbox with paddle shifters may be just what the automotive doctor ordered.
