Dictate text using speech recognition

You can use your voice to dictate text on your Windows PC. For example, you can dictate text to fill out an online form. Or you can dictate text into a word processor such as WordPad to enter a letter.


When you speak into the microphone, Windows Speech Recognition converts the words you speak into text that is displayed on the screen.

How to dictate text

  1. Open Speech Recognition by clicking the Start button Click on AllClick Programs, click Accessories, click Ease of Access andthen on Click Windows Speech Recognition.

  2. Say “Start Speech Recognition” or click the button microphone to start voice recognition mode.

  3. Open the program you want or select the text box into which you want to dictate text.

  4. Speak the text you want to dictate.

Correcting dictation errors


There are several ways to correct mistakes made while dictating. To correct the last speech input, you must say "Correct this." To correct a single word, say the word you want to correct followed by "correct". If the word appears more than once, all instances are highlighted and You can choose which instance to correct, and you can use the language dictionary to add words that are often misunderstood or not recognized.

To Use the Alternate Window Dialog Box

  1. Open Speech Recognition by clicking the Start button Click on AllClick Programs, Accessories click,on Ease of Use clickand then on Click Windows Speech Recognition.

  2. Say “Start Speech Recognition” or click the button microphone to start voice recognition mode.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Say "Correct this" to correct the last speech you entered.

    • To correct a single word, say the word you want to correct followed by "correct".

  4. Name in the dialog box Alternatives window the number next to the item you want, and then say "OK".

Note:If you want to change a selection, tell im Alternative window "Spell" and then the number of the element to be changed. Then say "OK".


How to use the language dictionary

  1. Open Speech Recognition by clicking the Start button Click on AllClick Programs, Accessories click,on Ease of Use clickand then on Click Windows Speech Recognition.

  2. Say “Start Speech Recognition” or click the button microphone to start voice recognition mode.

  3. Say “Open Language Dictionary”.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • To add a word to the dictionary, say Add new word or click on it and then follow the instructions in the wizard.

    • To exclude a specific word from dictation, say Exclude word from dictation or click on it and then follow the instructions in the wizard.

    • To correct or delete a word already in the dictionary, say Change existing words or click on it and then follow the instructions in the wizard.

Note:Speech recognition is only available for German, English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
