“What actually is a hashtag?” Is the question many users ask themselves when they are on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or Google+. The words behind the double cross had a niche existence for a long time, but today it is hard to imagine the world of the Internet without them. But how do you use them? How exactly do they work and what's the point behind them? We explain the meaning of hashtags.

So-called hashtags, i.e. words or strings preceded by a hash sign (#), are now ubiquitous in social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ and almost indispensable. Hashtags became known through the microblogging service Twitter, but they can now also be found on other social networks. Hashtags can also be used on the Instagram and Pinterest picture networks, and Facebook is also trying to establish hashtags in the feed. But what is a hashtag and what is the meaning? Hashtags were introduced in August 2007 by Chris Messina, a lawyer and internet activist.


What is a hashtag: meaning and definition

A hashtag is a keyword that is introduced by a hash sign (#).
  • "Hashtag" is an English combination of the two terms "hash " and "Day".
  • "Hash" stands for an English term for the double cross (#)
  • "Day" is the name for a keyword.

Put simply, a hashtag is a keyword marked by the hash symbol, which assigns a topic to a post or tweet. This type of keywording can be used either within the text or as a single word. If you click on the keyword, you will be forwarded to posts with the same hashtag.

If you use a hashtag in a tweet or in a post on Facebook or Google+, this post will be made available for keyword searches. If you search for the term, your own contribution can be found accordingly. This is how hashtags such as #GIGA are created. On Twitter, hashtags can be used to determine which Twitter topics are particularly popular at the moment. For this purpose, the microblogging service created the “Trends” tab, which can be filtered worldwide, but also regionally.

Controversial topics are quickly assigned a tweet, which is usually determined by the Twitter community. The Twitter trends then show which topics Twitter users are currently talking about most intensely. On Sunday evenings, for example, the hashtag #tatort can regularly be found among the top topics. Hashtags for soccer games or other sporting events are also popular. For club sports you simply use the common abbreviation of the respective team. The right hashtag for the German “Clasico” between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich is, for example, #bvbfcb.

Hashtags: Rather unpopular on Facebook

If you click on such a hashtag, you get to the topic overview page, which chronologically lists the current contributions to the keyword. All posts and tweets that were also tagged with the hashtag can be found in such a timeline. This makes it easier for people to find posts on topics that interest them. If hashtags are very popular on Twitter and quickly identify popular topics, they are also used on Google+.

These can now also be used on Facebook, but the popularity there is not particularly great and accordingly the added value when searching for a hashtag is not particularly great. The situation is completely different with the picture service Instagram from Facebook: Here, too, as on Twitter, hashtags are used to categorize pictures and show those interested with "#instafood" food contributions, with "#selfie" self-portraits "and with" sunrise "sunrises.

How do I use hashtags?

To use a hashtag, all you have to do is add a diamond to the keyword you want. An example would be "#Germany". The respective network will recognize the keyword by means of the diamond and activate it as a link in the published article. If the hashtag is not just an abbreviation, but should consist of several words, the words are separated by underscores (_) so that the phrase remains legible.

Spaces are not allowed in hashtags. When using hashtags from major events or controversial topics, it is important to use the most frequently used hashtag. The official hashtag is now specified by many organizers and the hosting media in order to simplify the keywording. In the case of TV broadcasts, for example, the corresponding day is displayed in the top corner of the screen.

Hashtags: Also important for your own categorization

With hashtags it is not only possible to categorize major events and TV events, but also to assign private collections of tweets, photos and other postings to a topic. For example, if your Twitter followers want to browse your food postings, you can tag them with your own hashtag such as "#username_isst". Another advantage of this keywording is that you can browse your own posts retrospectively and create a well-categorized archive in just a few simple steps.
