The quality of teaching is of central importance for the learning success of students (Hattie, 2008). While validated survey instruments are already available for the core subjects, this is still pending for the subject of sport. In the present article, established questionnaire inventories from the core subjects to record the teaching dimensions of class management and student orientation are adapted to the subject of sport and empirically tested. The test battery comprises eight characteristics of good teaching, which adequately depict the two teaching dimensions. The construct validity and the psychometric quality criteria can be confirmed via exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. With this developed battery of tests, the quality of teaching from the student's point of view can be recorded economically and validly.
High quality teaching is a vital component for the successful learning of students (Hattie, 2008). Validated measurement instruments for the core subject areas of teaching already exists, however this is not the case for Physical Education (PE). In this article, the established and validated instruments of the core subjects are adjusted to better suit Physical Education and they are then empirically tested. The validated instruments have been shown to effectively capture two teaching dimensions; classroom management and student orientation. The test battery for validating a PE-specific measurement instruments consists of eight characteristics of qualitative teaching, which encompass the two teaching dimensions adequately. The construct validity and psychometric quality criteria were confirmed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes. The resultant test battery is valid and reliable in measuring teaching quality from the student’s perspective.
