Provera When to start your post-abortion period

After an abortion

Of course, we will do everything we can to carry out the procedure carefully and considerately and to save you unnecessary pain.

Pain

Surgical abortion:

Immediately after a surgical abortion, the uterus contracts. Rarely does this lead to a slight pulling or pain in the short term. If you are in pain, you will of course be given an additional pain reliever.

Drug termination:

After taking the second tablet (Cyprostol®), the prostaglandin, stomach and / or lower back pain often occurs. We therefore recommend the preventive intake of a pain reliever at the same time: Parkemed®, (Ibu-) Brufen 200mg, e.g. Dismenol® or Diclofenac, e.g. Voltaren® 50 or 75mg. If you are in pain, you should take a pain reliever in good time

What do I have to consider after an abortion?

Bleeding

Surgical abortion:

Bleeding after a surgical abortion is usually less than normal menstrual bleeding. However, it can start irregularly, e.g. not at all or very weakly for the first 1-2 days.

In a few cases, the bleeding may be more severe. After exiting the uterus, the blood can clot as soon as it comes into contact with the vagina. The blood is then excreted as a clot of blood. (They are not 'lumps of tissue'.) This is a sign of excessive bleeding.

Mifegyne:

If the drug is terminated, the bleeding usually only begins after taking the prostaglandin Cyprostol® and can be stronger than the normal menstrual period for a few hours. After that, it goes away, but can last for 1-2 weeks as light spotting.

Sexual intercourse, tampons, swimming, bathing, etc.

You should not have sexual intercourse or use swimming, bathing, or tampons for the first 2 days after an abortion. After that, you can do anything that is good for you. There is no indication that these activities would lead to an increased risk of infection after 2 days.
Showering is of course possible at any time!

Antibiotics

Surgical abortion:

We always do an examination of the vaginal secretions before a surgical abortion. If there is any sign of inflammation in or during the termination, you will be given an antibiotic.

Mifegyne:

There is no increased risk of infection with drug termination.

fever

Very rarely inflammation occurs after termination. This would manifest itself with a fever in the days after a termination fever. In such a case, you should contact us as soon as possible.

Pregnancy symptoms: nausea, breast tenderness

Any existing nausea will go away within one day after the termination. Breast tenderness can sometimes persist for up to about 3 weeks.
Occasionally, pregnancy symptoms last a little longer after drug abortion than after surgical abortion.

pregnancy test

The pregnancy hormone hCG is slowly eliminated from the body and the usual tests are very sensitive. Therefore, a pregnancy test can deliver a positive test result up to the onset of the next menstrual period, despite the termination.
An ultrasound examination gives you reliable information about whether you are still pregnant or not.

Sick leave

Surgical abortion:

Usually, you recover very quickly after the surgery and in most cases you do not need to go on sick leave.

Drug termination:

Occasionally, heavy bleeding may occur in the first hours after taking the prostaglandin Cyprostol®. We therefore recommend that you do not work during this time. At most, short-term childcare support can be helpful.

Heavy physical activity

For most women, abortion is no more stressful than a normal menstrual period. That means you can do anything that is good for you.

Follow-up check

Surgical abortion:

Immediately after a surgical abortion, we always do an ultrasound scan to make sure that the uterine cavity is empty.
It makes sense to go to your gynecologist a few weeks later to discuss how to proceed with contraception.

Drug termination:

You should have an ultrasound examination after 1-3 weeks to determine that the pregnancy is really over!

Next menstrual period

A new cycle begins for the body with the termination. The next menstrual period usually starts about 4-6 weeks later. This can sometimes be a bit stronger than normal.

Mental health after an abortion:

Many women experience the time up to the termination stressful and feel relieved after the procedure. (See also the book: 'Sad and liberated at the same time', experience reports from women, www.abtreib.at ...)
To prevent mental health problems, it is important that you:

  • were well informed beforehand
  • made the decision self-determined
  • there is benevolent, social acceptance of their decision in their personal environment
  • were optimally cared for medically and personally in a pleasant atmosphere

An abortion can also be experienced as a relief and relief. Occasional periods of sadness are part of a normal process of dealing with things like in any other crisis situation.

Fertility - contraception

The pregnancy at hand shows that you are fertile. Cancellation without complications has no negative effects on fertility. The next ovulation occurs about 2 weeks after an abortion. You can get pregnant again immediately if you do not use safe contraception. You should start using hormonal contraceptive methods (pill, stick, ring, plaster, three-month injection) immediately after the abortion. In the case of drug termination, you can start using a hormonal contraceptive method of your choice the day after the bleeding begins.

The chance of complications after an abortion is very slim, but if you feel that something is wrong, please do not hesitate to contact us. You can reach one of our doctors by phone around the clock!

If you are still breastfeeding

In any case, after the termination, you can continue breastfeeding as before.

In the case of surgical abortion, the drugs that we use at Gynmed are only effective for a very short time and are already broken down before you leave the outpatient clinic.

You can continue to breastfeed unchanged even after drug termination. Only a very small amount of Mifegyne (®) gets into breast milk and this is ineffective in children, as well as in men, because neither of them have receptors for the pregnancy hormone progesterone.

The prostaglandin cyprostol (®) / misoprostol is also excreted from the blood just a few hours after ingestion. There is no evidence that Mifegyne (R) or Cytotec (R) / cyprostol (R) have side effects in a newborn. No special precautionary measures can be derived from the available data.

However, the manufacturer recommends avoiding the use of Mifegyne during breastfeeding for legal protection and in the absence of detailed investigations.
