Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (AbbreviationSECTION) is a synthetic terpolymer made from the three different types of monomers acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene and belongs to the group of amorphous thermoplastics. The proportions can vary from 15-35% acrylonitrile, 5-30% butadiene and 40-60% styrene.
ABS is produced on an industrial scale by graft copolymerization, but it can also be done by blending (mixing) the finished polymers. In the case of ABS produced by graft copolymerization, a distinction is made between the emulsion and in-mass processes.
The raw materials are gradually added to the polymerization. This creates condensates that have to be degassed. The butadiene particles are crushed by the process and thus result in the yellow color that is typical of ABS.
All raw materials are passed through all stages of the polymerization together. There are hardly any condensates and degassing is eliminated to a minimum. The butadiene particles remain large. This makes the ABS lighter (better for self-coloring) and it contains fewer foreign substances (lower emissions). Due to the larger butadiene particles, in-mass ABS is more impact-resistant with a lower butadiene content.

Significantly more than 50% of the ABS production volume in Western Europe is consumed by the automotive and electrical industries.
ABS is well suited for coating with metals and polymers. This makes it e.g. B. possible to get a chrome-plated surface on a plastic part.
