Smart marketers always emphasize something

Imitate smart keys - what costs do I have to expect?

Hello everybody,

I bought a used Smart 451 two years ago. A key is now very badly damaged and I have decided to have a new one made. When I called the workshop by phone and asked about the costs, I was told that I would have to pay around 200 euros for the key and 50 euros for training.

The day before yesterday I was personally in the workshop to order the key and was quite astonished when I was told that I needed an appointment so that my "car should be read out". Now, as an absolute car amateur, I ask myself: Is it necessary to read a car in order to order a new key, and if so, what does the readout cost?

I thank you in advance

Sandra

But I have to emphasize again that not all Smart Centers are criminals or rip-offs.

So far I have always been well served and informed. If something cannot be done easily or could be expensive, I would be given alternatives.

Hello Sandra,

If only the housing or the key blade of your key is damaged, you do not urgently need to go to the Smart Center / Daimler.

Because you can also do this on Amazon (CLICK HERE)

or order cheap Ali Express (China) (CLICK HERE).

If the electronics are not broken, you can have the key blade cut by the locksmith.

Optionally, you can have "Mr Minit" or similar Schnell locksmiths (mostly in shopping centers or discounters) made in-house, complete with loops and new electronics for less than 100 €.

Greetings Andreas

The key with the defective housing should even have an intact key bit, mostly only the plastic housing goes over the Jordan.

And you would normally have to be able to convert the key bit to a new housing!

Then you don't even need to have one milled!

The transmitter board is rarely broken!

That’s why you don’t need a sinfully expensive key from a SC, they’re just ripping you off!

What is badly damaged on the key? Often only the rubber mat says goodbye and it only costs a few cents online.

Thank you all for your answers

The rubber mat and housing of my key are broken and the electronics work perfectly. However, I was told in the SmartCenter that the housing could not be ordered separately, but that the key would have to be completely remade. At first I was really shocked.

You have to remember one thing very well, in the SC they talk a lot when the day is long.

Above all, a lot of nonsense! : rolleyes:

Although these conifers may not be that wrong, it is actually possible that the housing cannot be ordered separately from Smart, but that doesn't change the fact that it can be obtained elsewhere, as you can see!

Turn these gangsters a long nose and get the case from one of the sources mentioned! There are endless possibilities for this!

In your case, it makes sense to buy a blank without a beard and convert it, then you even save yourself milling a blank.

I'm assuming that the key bit in the damaged key is still intact.

Then you have a functional key again for cheap money!

I'll buy the case from amazon and try to get the beard out of the old case and install it in the new one.

Thank you so much.

Hello,

Replacement keys are just as expensive or even more expensive from other manufacturers.

There is plenty of money to be made.

And reading out the requested code in the SC is necessary and also desirable, otherwise every hobbyist could copy the key with a scanner from the bay in passing. Only real professionals can do it like this, but they are definitely not after a die.

It is very likely, as mirsanmir writes, that the SC cannot actually order replacement shells, even if they procure them from others. In the amount that is offered in the bay, that is certainly the case.

They say to themselves why little money can be made with such small parts when you can sell the whole key at a high price.

They haven't had any replacement ABS rings for a long time and have sold entire drive shafts ...

greetings

Thorsten

I don't know if the key from the 451 works like this. But on the 450 I removed the beard of the new case by drilling out the small plastic nipple. Then I pushed in the old key bit and attached it with a toothpick and superglue.

That will last for 2 years without any problems :-)

But be careful if you get yourself a new key housing: 3 things have to be exchanged, once the beard, once the electronics and the transponder chip. If you forget that, you will still have problems despite everything. (Smart shit)

There is no separate transponder chip with the Smart, only the transponder is soldered onto the circuit board. And no, you don't have to read a vehicle to order a key. Incidentally, key learning is very easy with the Smart!

Hi where do you live In Limburg an der Lahn there is a locksmith who does that. Call himself a judge or something
