Blackboard paint - tips & ideas for great walls with blackboard paint

Practical idea for at home, for the children's room, for offices, for classrooms or for shops: blackboard paint turns walls into blackboards. Simply label, wipe out and label again. And we show you how to do it here!

We have collected interesting information about blackboard paint for the walls here. Also included: creative inspirations for imaginative wall design with writable walls, ideas around magnetic blackboard paint, but also alternatives to painted blackboard walls. Just read through and get inspired.

This is how walls become indescribable ... and yet writable!

With blackboard paint, walls and other smooth surfaces (glass, plastic, metal ...) can be painted or varnished as with normal paint. The processed area can later be written on with chalk and thus becomes an XXL board that can be used as the mood takes you. Whether for your own works of art, for sayings, for shopping lists, for offers or as a highlight in the children's room, blackboard walls are becoming increasingly popular.

There are blackboard colors here!

What is the difference between blackboard lacquer and blackboard paint?

Often it is from the boardcolour and from blackboardpaint the speech. It is therefore justified to ask whether there is a difference between blackboard paint and blackboard lacquer. Unfortunately, it has to be said here: In the end, it doesn't really become that clear when you look at the product range. The terms blackboard lacquer and blackboard paint are often used synonymously (even by one and the same provider). Sometimes the term “chalk paint” is also used. Pretty confusing. Whether the colors or varnishes offered differ from one another actually depends on the manufacturer. Therefore, if in doubt, ask!

Blackboard paints and varnishes have one Matt surface. Depending on the composition and consistency, around 100 - 250 ml are required for 1 m². The relevant information can be found on the paint containers or can be requested from the dealer.

Are there also colorful blackboard paints?

Yes, there is also colorful blackboard paint. If the gray blackboard color is too gloomy for you, you can also use bright colors as a blackboard color. While the well-known colors for typical school blackboards are more gray or dark green, there are the blackboard colors that you can paint yourself in many other shades: from blue to pink, from pastel to strong colors, many bright and colorful nuances are available.

If the desired color is not in the manufacturer's range, there are two options. One of them is called: Do it yourself. More on that later. The second is called: colorless blackboard paint. The transparent color can be spread over any surfaces and turns them into an individual board.

Generally, you should consider whether it is ready-made blackboard paint or self-made: The lighter the color, the less contrasting the chalk artwork will be later and the less clearly white writing will be seen later on the surface.

How should the surface for blackboard paint be?

Basically, the same applies to the surface design with blackboard lacquer or blackboard paint as with normal painting: The surface should be dry, clean and free of grease.

Experts also recommend a suitable primer so that the blackboard paint can develop its optimal effect. The primer is usually available together with the blackboard paint.

The smoother the surface, the better. Woodchip wallpaper, for example, is less suitable for painting with blackboard paint, as the structure of the wallpaper is a hindrance later on when writing and painting.

So if you have unsuitable woodchip wallpaper or plaster on your walls at home, but still don't want to do without the blackboard on the wall, there is one for you following tip: Paint thin chipboard or similar supports with the paint and attach to the wall or, as shown in our example image, set up as a roll construction.

Here, too, a primer should not be missing, since wooden panels can be very absorbent depending on the type of manufacture or pretreatment, which turns out to be counterproductive for designing with blackboard paint. The separate blackboard panels on the wall also have the advantage that they can simply be removed again if necessary. Blackboard paint cannot always be easily painted over.

If very smooth surfaces (e.g. plastic or previously painted) are painted with blackboard paint or varnish, it cannot do any harm if the surface is roughened with sandpaper before painting.

Tips for designing the board surface

Anyone who decides on a self-painted blackboard wall is often faced with the question: Isn't a large, dark wall surface too much? Therefore: just make the board as large as it makes sense to you. Because dark wall surfaces are actually striking statements. Just play through various possibilities and ideas in your mind. Are there protrusions, niches or already existing boundaries that can be used as a frame for the blackboard wall?

On the other hand, you can also give your blackboard a frame yourself. Tip: Simply nail strips (e.g. made of wood) around your painted board in the desired dimension, which specifically represent the boundary and in this way visually separate the board and at the same time give it a clean edge.

How is blackboard paint applied?

When walls are painted with blackboard paint, the procedure is actually the same as with normal painting: Cover the floor in the appropriate places. Mask off the edges and transitions well with foil and painter's tape. Above all, if only certain parts of the wall are to be designed with the paint, it is important to ensure that the edges are clean.

Blackboard paint can be combined with a roleor a brush be applied. Most manufacturers recommend two coats for a good result.

Whether you choose a brush or a roller depends not least on the surface and the consistency of the paint or varnish. Basically, better results can be achieved with the paint roller, the result is more even.

Should you still go to brush grab there following tip for an even result:

Apply the first coat with horizontal brushstrokes, the second coat with vertical brushstrokes. Or the other way around!

The only important thing is that the brushstrokes are at right angles (90 °) to each other. So the overall picture appears more even in the end.

A blackboard lacquer can be painted over again after a drying time of approx. 4 hours. After 48 hours of drying time, the board surface can be written on.

How is the blackboard paint written on and cleaned?

Walls or surfaces that have been painted with blackboard paint should dry for about 2 days before they are written on.

You can write or paint on it with normal blackboard chalk. This chalk is available in white and also in other colors. This is especially fun for children when they are artistically active on the blackboard wall in the children's room.

Often one finds the question whether Blackboard color labeled with liquid chalk or chalk markers can be. These chalk pens are used, for example, in gastronomy on offer boards because they can be used to achieve a cleaner and more brilliant result. Chalk markers with liquid chalk are often only suitable for surfaces that are not porous. On porous surfaces (old blackboards, paper, painted walls) it can happen that the liquid chalk cannot be removed or can only be removed with difficulty. Whether liquid chalk is suitable for the blackboard paint or the blackboard lacquer depends on their composition.

Chalkboard paint can normally be wiped off slightly damp with a microfiber cloth. If the blackboard paint is written on with stubborn liquid chalk, a special cleaner may help to remove liquid chalk.

Two more tips that can be found for cleaning a blackboard:

1) For stubborn liquid chalk: Simply rub some toothpaste over the areas to be cleaned with a dry cloth. Then wipe it off with a little water.

2) Use cola. No joke, just soak a sponge in Coke and wipe the board. This works especially when boards have a large white film due to frequent wiping. With this method, there are hardly any white streaks left that make blackboards and blackboard walls look unattractive over time.

Twice as good - magnetic blackboard paint

There is this idea for a double decoration experience: Simply bring a magnetic board wall into the apartment.

This is how it works - apply magnetic paint and blackboard paint separately: The wall is first painted with a special magnetic paint. This paint contains the finest iron particles, which later ensure that magnets stick to the painted wall. The magnetic paint itself cannot yet be written on, so it must first be painted over with blackboard paint. Please note, however, that the magnetic paint must be applied thick enough in several layers so that it can develop its full force of attraction under the blackboard sheet.

Tip 1: Experience has shown that it makes sense to use strong magnets.

Another possibility is to mix iron powder with the blackboard paint and thus save painting with the magnetic paint. The result depends on the size of the area to be painted, the amount of paint and the added amount of iron powder.

Tip 2: A metal plate (or a surface that works with magnets) can just as well be painted where there is no need for a large magnetic wall, but only a small part of the magnetic board. It is best to seek advice from a specialist shop or to test it on a small sample beforehand.

Blackboard paint for the children's room

It always means you shouldn't paint on the wall. But that's how it works ... Blackboard walls are particularly popular in children's rooms. By the way: Doors or furniture in the children's room can also be designed with blackboard lacquer.

Our example image shows what a wall designed with blackboard paint can look like in a child's room. If you like it more colorful, you can of course also use brightly colored table colors.

Discover creative starry skies to stick on here.

In the case of dark blackboard surfaces, it is recommended - in the children's room and in the rest of the apartment - to integrate lighter contrasting surfaces into the overall picture. In our case, these are the light-colored floor, the white furniture and the white wall that adjoins the blackboard wall in the corner. The design and color of the board is cleverly picked up in the form of wall tattoo stars in a similar gray. In this way, the contrast between the dark blackboard wall and the light neighboring wall is softened in a creative way and does not appear too extreme.

Design ideas for painting boards

When the time comes and the wall is finally ready to be painted, the question naturally arises which one Motif, design, pattern or whatever saying best enhances the wall. As always, the general rule here is that your own ideas are usually the best. Let your imagination run wild, try (after all, mistakes can be eliminated with a quick swipe) and experiment with colors.

If you are looking for suggestions, you will find it on the Internet. Many tutorials on the design of boards, hand-painted motifs and self-written texts in vintage style are available as videos and blogs.

Blackboard film - an alternative to blackboard paint

An alternative that often comes into play in the course of wall design with blackboard paint is the so-called blackboard foil. Depending on the provider, this film is a very thin, self-adhesive vinyl film with surface properties that are similar to those of the blackboard. This means that the film can also be written on (chalk or liquid chalk) and can be wiped off again as desired. The blackboard film is also available in different colors.

Advantage of Blackboard foil is that, thanks to their manufacturing process, these panels are in more unusual shapes that can be glued to the wall, furniture or doors. For example the advertising pillar, which the manufacturer can cut out of a rectangular piece of sheet metal. Another advantage of the blackboard film is that it comes into the apartment without the effort of painting and can simply be removed again if necessary.

However, if you want to design larger areas individually, you won't get very far with the blackboard film. In this case, blackboard paint is better, which can be applied according to your needs and size. Another plus point for the blackboard paint is that it is compatible with many substrates. Blackboard film, on the other hand, does not adhere to walls that have been painted with latex paint or paints that contain silicone, for example.

Which option you choose depends on the individual framework and your ideas.

Creative ideas with blackboard paint for the wall

Designing walls with blackboard paint doesn't just mean painting and painting. For those who like it really creative, the pleasure only begins then.

Because blackboard walls can be creatively combined. Simply turn your blackboard into a cloakroom or a key rack. To do this, simply attach wall hooks at any point or fasten with a separate board. For example, the various coat hooks can be labeled with "Mama", "Papa", "Marie" etc.

Clocks also come into their own on the blackboard wall. Whether as a finished wall clock or as a single clockwork with a painted clock face made of chalk: A wall clock in the midst of self-painted works of art or funny sayings on the subject of "time" or "punctuality" becomes an eye-catcher.

Anyone who loves photographs and pictures can work with unusual picture frames. Put a collage of picture frames on your blackboard wall and add the date and holiday location to each photo, like in an oversized photo album.

Another way to creatively combine picture frames is to simply hang empty frames on the writable wall and draw your own picture with chalk exactly where the board hangs.

And finally: can the blackboard paint be painted over?

Whether and how well the blackboard wall can be painted over depends on the composition of the paint used. A paint with lacquer properties is less easy to paint over. Check with the seller before shopping.

In many cases there is a possibility of removing or painting over the blackboard paint. Often this is associated with you Sanding the surface, one Primer for the new paint and the actual Paint over the area with the new color.

Depending on the color, opacity and composition of the blackboard paint and the new paint, this can mean a few coats of paint.

Conclusion: How much effort you want to make with removing and painting over the blackboard paint is up to you. But if you know, for example, that you want to move shortly or are not sure whether you want a large blackboard wall at all, you should perhaps refrain from painting half the apartment gray. In this case, simply use one of the alternatives (blackboard foil, paint chipboard with blackboard paint ...). Otherwise, the following applies: trying is better than studying. Just ask at the Bauhaus or the manufacturer or search the Internet for experience reports!

DIY tip: make your own blackboard paint - with plaster

If you only want to design smaller areas with blackboard paint, you can use recipes for homemade blackboard paint that can be found in various guides. Our favorite: blackboard paint made from acrylic varnish and plaster.

  • Acrylic varnish: just choose any color.
  • plaster
  • Container (bowl, small bucket)
  • Brush or roller

Mix the paint in a ratio of 3: 1 with plaster. Use a measuring cup, a large jam jar or a small bowl to measure. In principle, the mass can also be roughly touched by feeling. Slowly sprinkle the plaster into the varnish, stirring well so that no lumps form and a slightly creamy mixture results. Alternatively, the plaster of paris can be mixed with a little water until it is creamy and then mixed with the acrylic varnish.

Then process the mass. However, this blackboard paint should not be used to paint the walls directly, as acrylic paint cannot really be painted over later. It therefore makes more sense here to paint a wooden panel or something similar and attach it to the wall.
